I just wanted to alert all of you to a Social Security scam phone call I have been getting almost daily, because I just qualified for Medicare.
Both of my Adult Children work for the Social Security Administration. They told me to just hang up or not return any calls from someone claiming to be an officer from the Social Security "department" as the caller said.
Firstly -The proper name is the Social Security Administration ( SSA) not department. Though some scammers are savvy enough to say Administration.
Secondly- There is no such title as "officer " within the SSA. Employees of the SAA who deal with the public are called "Claims Representatives"
Thirdly- There was a lot of background noise on the callers end which means a scammer boiler room center. The caller ID was from a small town in Virginia so the call was probably placed from a burner phone.
I got the scammers number and will report it to the SSA fraud division.
Finally , the Social Security Administration will never cold call you . A letter gets sent first. You must make a follow up call to the office which is listed in the SSA.gov website.
You should also set up your own account with SSA .
Go to..
"MySocialSecurity.gov " to get started.
It's a good idea to check on your benefits weather you're over 65 or much younger and working.
